Use professional image editing or desktop publishing software that is reasonably up to date when creating your PDF (ex. InDesign 4.0 or later).
You don’t need to create an index page: our website generates this automatically. Like all products published in Germany, Calvendo products are required to have an imprint (Impressumspflicht) and this a liability of the publisher, not the author. Also, we usually add the calvendo logo, the ISBN and the order number. To make sure that this information, which is required for legal, logistical and distribution purposes, does not get changed by accident or otherwise, access to this area in the editor is restricted.
Make sure that your PDF files are created using the standard PDF/X-3 and are not larger than 100MB. A margin of 3 mm is needed for cropping, which increases the side lengths by 6 mm. If you want to have your pages printed without a margin, it’s best to blow up the images accordingly.
Export settings:Standard: PDF/X-3
Cropping: top = 3 mm, bottom = 3 mm, outside (or right) = 3 mm and inside (or left) = 3 mm
Crop marks / printer marks: turned off
Resolution: at least 150 DPI, maximally 300 DPI
Select New Project from the main menu. Before launching the Publisher, you need to choose between portrait and landscape format and between the kind of publication – calendar or poster book (Flipart). Then you click on the right-hand (!) button that says Start Publisher.
Before you upload your layout, you need to decide on a few things, such as a title for your project, the language in which your project is to be published and whether you want to apply a flexible calendar grid. Your project will be listed under this title on your profile page (My Projects).
On the Settings page, you upload your PDF layout by clicking on the Open button where it says “Upload PDF layout.” A dialogue box will open. Select the PDF from your folder, then click Upload file. This may take a while. When the upload is complete, your PDF will show up in your Uploaded Files folder. Uploading files from a USB flash drive or an external disk can be problematic. It’s better to save it on your computer first. Now click on Use file – the dialogue box will close and clicking Next will take you to the Layout Editor tab. There is nothing you need to do at this point because you have already uploaded your edited layout. Clicking on Next takes you to the next step.
What follows is identical with the process you go through when you set up your project using the Calvendo Publisher: You enter the product title and your name (plus those of your collaborators, if any) to be used on the index page. Check your work closely by opening the Preview tab and creating a PDF from your project. Write an expressive product description and determine a retail price for your poster book (Flipart) or calendar.
Finished? Now you can submit your project! If our jury finds no fault, they will release it for publication. At this point, your product receives an ISBN and can be ordered through various online book sellers or through any local book shops.
